A QUICK Guide to Zhangjiajie

Best Time to Visit Zhangjiajie
Zhangjiajie is a year-round destination, but the best seasons are spring and autumn. These months offer mild temperatures, good visibility, and ideal conditions for photography and hiking.
March to June
Comfortable weather, lush landscapes, and mist that often creates atmospheric views across the sandstone pillars.
September to November
Clear skies, excellent visibility, and the best overall weather for outdoor activities. Autumn is ideal for travelers who want predictable conditions.
Dates to Avoid
Certain Chinese holidays experience extremely high domestic tourism. Avoid these periods if possible:
- Chinese New Year (late Jan to mid-Feb)
- Qingming Festival (early April)
- Labor Day Week (May 1–5)
- National Day Golden Week (Oct 1–7)
During these times, expect long lines, limited hotel availability, and higher prices.
How to Get to Zhangjiajie
Zhangjiajie is well connected by both air and high-speed rail, making it accessible from major cities across China.
By Air
Zhangjiajie Hehua International Airport (DYG) offers flights to and from:
- Shanghai (about 2.5 hours)
- Beijing (about 3 hours)
- Guangzhou and Shenzhen (1.5 to 2 hours)
- Chengdu and Chongqing (about 1.5 hours)
The airport is roughly 15 minutes from downtown, which makes transfers easy.
By Train
Zhangjiajie West Railway Station connects to several major hubs:
- Changsha: around 3.5 hours
- Chongqing: around 4 hours
- Guangzhou: around 6 hours
- Shanghai: 8–10 hours, with overnight options
High-speed rail is comfortable and often more budget-friendly than flying.
